BSc in Marketing / Modern Languages at Aberystwyth University is an exciting and dynamic course that combines elements of marketing, consumer behaviour, digital and strategic marketing with the study of languages and culture. Taught by accredited and renowned marketing experts within the Aberystwyth Business School and the Department of Modern Languages, over the course of the degree you will develop a firm knowledge of external influences on the marketing world and the rapidly changing use of information technology and digital media for marketing purposes.

BSc Marketing/ Modern Languages will allow you to combine the theory of marketing in its respective discipline with the study of languages and culture - choose from French, German, Spanish and Italian. This degree will equip you with attractive linguistic skills that will enable you to excel post-university.

Aberystwyth University is an accredited Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Graduate Gateway Centre, which means that you can study towards a professional CIM qualification while studying for a degree, or gain exemptions for certain CIM modules in the future.

Language development

  • You can study your choice of languages from beginners' or advanced level - choose from French, German, Spanish and Italian. Beginners will follow an intensive course in the first year.
  • You will receive four hours of linguistic and grammar classes per week. The Department of Modern Languages is a relatively small and close-knit department, which means that you will benefit from our unique approach to language development. All of our language tutors are native speakers or experts in the relevant target language.
  • Your year abroad will be spent in a country related to your chosen language. You can choose to study at one of our partnered universities, undertake a paid or unpaid work placement, or a combination of the two.

On completion of this degree you will possess:

  • A broad understanding of management and marketing in practice
  • The ability to communicate in your chosen language
  • In-depth knowledge of trade and commerce in the public and private sector
  • A solid grasp in the complexity of management challenges and the combined impact of the economic, financial, human and legal issues that leaders encounter.
Our Staff

Students at the Aberystwyth Business School are taught by lecturers and other teaching staff who are active researchers and expert practitioners in their chosen subject area.

Over 75% of full time members of teaching staff are qualified to PhD level. Most are currently research active, meaning that students benefit from being taught ‘new’ knowledge in their chosen field of study as well as recognized literature. The School also employs part-time and full time staff devoted purely to teaching. Many part-time staff combine teaching duties with consultancy and business activities, ensuring that students have access not only to up to date research but the latest applied knowledge.

All of the lecturers in the Department of Modern Languages are qualified to PhD level and are research active specialists in their chosen field. We also employ highly qualified and experienced language tutors, and native-speakers, who will ensure that your learning is of the highest possible quality and who will provide you with constant support through your years of study.

Teaching & Learning

What will I learn?

In all years you will have four weekly hours of language work – choose from French, German, Spanish and Italian.

In your first year you will explore:

  • Fundamental principles of management and business
  • Marketing principles and the relationship between management and organisation
  • Optional modules including accounting and finance, the economy, data analytics, language, culture and identity.

In your second year you will discover:

  • Consumer behaviour
  • Theories of marketing management
  • Your choice of optional modules, including business relationships, customer experience, literature, language, cinema and culture.

In your third year, you will undertake your year abroad, working or studying in countries related to your chosen language.

In your final year, you will study:

  • Digital marketing
  • Your choice of optional modules, including tourism marketing, strategic leadership, literature, language, cinema and culture.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, language classes, seminars and tutorials.

Assessment

Methods of assessment may include examinations, course work, reports, essays, projects and presentations.
