BSc Business and Management / Modern Languages at  Aberystwyth Business School and Department of Modern Languages will enable you to engage with the business world from the beginning. This degree has been engineered for a student who wants to excel and succeed to the top level of global business management practice.

Our expert academics will guide you through areas of marketing, operations management, finance, accounting, strategy, human resource management, entrepreneurship - in addition to a range of other cutting-edge and specialist modules. 

You will develop and improve your language skill base with the Department of Modern Languages, where you will develop a higher appreciation, knowledge and passion for languages and cultures.

Course Overview

Language development

  • You can study your choice of language from beginners' or advanced level - chooose from French, Italian, German and Spanish. Beginners will follow an intensive course in the first year.
  • The Department of Modern Languages is a relatively small and close-knit department, which means that you will benefit from our unique approach to language development. All of language tutors are native speakers or experts in the relevant target language.
  • Your year abroad will be spent in a country related to your chosen language. You can choose to study at one of our partnered universities, undertake a paid or unpaid work placement, or a combination of the two.
Our Staff

Students at the Aberystwyth Business School are taught by lecturers and other teaching staff who are active researchers and expert practitioners in their chosen subject area.

Over 75% of full time members of teaching staff are qualified to PhD level. Most are currently research active, meaning that students benefit from being taught ‘new’ knowledge in their chosen field of study as well as recognized literature. The School also employs part-time and full time staff devoted purely to teaching. Many part-time staff combine teaching duties with consultancy and business activities, ensuring that students have access not only to up to date research but the latest applied knowledge.

All of the lecturers in the Department of Modern Languages are qualified to PhD level and are research active specialists in their chosen field. We also employ highly qualified and experienced language tutors, and native-speakers, who will ensure that your learning is of the highest possible quality and who will provide you with constant support through your years of study.

Teaching & Learning

What will I learn?

In all years you will have four weekly hours of language work – choose from French, German, Spanish and Italian.

In your first year you will explore:

  • Fundamental principles of management
  • The dynamics of the modern business environment
  • The use of financial and accounting information in management decisions at operational and strategic levels
  • Marketing principles and the relationship between management and organisation
  • Optional modules on language, culture, identity and film.

In your second year you will discover:

  • Human resource management
  • Theories and techniques of operations management
  • Your choice of optional modules, including marketing management, entrepreneurship, literature, language, cinema and culture.

In your third year, you will undertake your year abroad, working or studying in countries related to your chosen language.

In your final year, you will study:

  • The role of financial strategy in the investing, financing and resource-allocation decisions within an organization
  • Strategic leadership
  • Your choice of optional modules, including digital business, global logistics, literature, language, cinema and culture.

How will I be taught?

You will be taught through a combination of lectures, language classes, seminars and tutorials.

Assessment

Methods of assessment may include examinations, course work, essays, projects and presentations.
