One year full-time. The academic year (September to September) is divided into three semesters: September to January; January to June; June to September.
Approximately 15 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.
The taught part of the course (Part 1) is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies, course work and formal examinations. The subsequent successful submission of your research dissertation (Part 2) leads to the award of an MSc.

The Master’s in Management and Marketing is a taught, one-year, full-time programme. The course is divided into three 15 week semesters. In the first two semesters, contact time averages about 15 hours a week for the first ten to twelve weeks, leaving the last three to five weeks for examinations. The third semester is given over to the Managerial Reports Module, which involves 12 hours of workshops and then ongoing contact time with your tutor as you prepare a substantial piece of work (up to 14,000 words) on a real-world business and management topic.
Teaching in the Aberystwyth Business School is underpinned by research. Our academic staff publish their work in leading academic journals and regularly act as consultants to a range of organizations. We have significant strengths in areas such as entrepreneurship, human resource management, international business and operations and supply chain management. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment the university was placed in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university's research was of an internationally recognised standard.
The Management Strand
This degree will suit you, whether you are intending to be a manager in Marketing, or a general manager or entrepreneur who understands Marketing. So, especially in the first Semester, the Management strand of the Master's degree in Management and Marketing covers the fundamental aspects of Management: managing people (Human Resource Management); managing money (Accounting for Managers); managing business information (Management Information Systems) and so on. Whatever the subject of your first degree, the Aberystwyth Masters in Management and Marketing will give you an essential grounding in the knowledge base and skill set which today’s managers require.
The Marketing Strand
In a global, multi-media marketplace, modern managers and entrepreneurs require a more sophisticated understanding of Marketing than ever before. Decisions about strategy and financial planning in business are crucially dependent on market conditions and opportunities, locally, nationally and internationally. Focusing on Marketing, in the second Semester, this Master's degree in Management and Marketing will equip you, as a manager, with the key skills you need to commission or carry out national and international Market Research, to analyse its results, to understand Consumer Behaviour, and to formulate, execute and monitor a Marketing Strategy for your business which uses the most effective media for the best consumer targets.
Students at the Aberystwyth Business School are taught by lecturers and other teaching staff who are active researchers and expert practitioners in their chosen subject area.
Over 75% of full time members of teaching staff are qualified to PhD level. Most are currently research active, meaning that students benefit from being taught ‘new’ knowledge in their chosen field of study as well as recognized literature. The School also employs part-time and full time staff devoted purely to teaching. Many part-time staff combine teaching duties with consultancy and business activities, ensuring that students have access not only to up to date research but the latest applied knowledge.

Fundamentals of Business and Management
The Master’s in Management and Marketing begins with a range of modules which introduce the fundamentals of Business and Management, which will apply to any sphere of business activity – and, in many cases, to several kinds of non-business organisation. In the first semester, modules in Human Resource Management, Research Skills for Managers and Information Management Systems are designed to enable you to maximise the productivity and efficiency of an organisation, focusing on the working and management relationships which are essential to its continued success, to the quality of life of its employees and to the service it offers to its customers and other stakeholders. Other modules in this semester introduce you to foundational principles in Accounting and Finance and in Marketing and the Business Environment.
Advanced Skills in Marketing
As you would expect, the further content of this Master’s degree is strongly weighted in favour of understanding all aspects of Marketing. You will study modules in Consumer Behaviour, International Marketing, Marketing Communications, and E-marketing and E-business, whilst continuing to develop your skills in the general areas of Corporate and Competitive Strategy. All of these modules are taught by lecturers who work at the cutting edge of research in Management and Marketing Studies.
Cultural Diversity in the Global Market Place
The rich cultural diversity of the international student body of Aberystwyth SMB is a great experience in and of itself. But it will also give you new and important discoveries about the world of international business and finance. In addition to the core module in International Business and International Marketing, you will have the opportunity to take option modules in Management in the Global Economy. You will be introduced to the requirements of financial market places and the importance of cultural awareness in dealing with business colleagues and customers from all over the world: in the UK and Western Europe, and in the emerging markets of new-accession EU states, China, India and others. Both in the modules dealing specifically with International Business and in sharing with student colleagues from all round the world, Aberystwyth SMB offers you great opportunities to learn from other cultures.
We believe that our Master’s in Management and Marketing students will be significant future leaders in the field of Management and Marketing. I hold a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Oslo and Akershus University College of Applied Sciences and wanted to do my Master’s degree in the UK and Aberystwyth seemed like an ideal place. Aberystwyth is a great location along the beautiful coastline combined with its rolling moors and wooded valleys.
The MScEcon in Management and Marketing really gives me a fundamental understanding of the business world and how it works. Being a postgraduate is definitely harder and more intense compared to when I was still an undergraduate. Aside from attending lectures and seminars, you will also have to work on assignments, projects and presentations, as well as taking the exams at the end of the semester. There’s definitely more work, but as long as you like what you’re studying, you’ll do fine.
The lecturers here are very enthusiastic and understand their fields of interest very well. They also have the ability to teach and encourage students to develop critical thinking and reasoning, which I really appreciate.
With the high teaching quality, you’ll definitely benefit from this program and it will broaden your perspective and deepen your knowledge about business, which will better-equip you for your future career.
After my Masters I plan to move back to Norway and pursue a career in marketing; probably work as a marketing consultant. I have made so many good friends in Aberystwyth, I feel delighted to be part of such an international group of students.
